About Transition Asheville

In 2011, Transition Asheville became the 88th official Transition Town in the United States. The transition movement is a social experiment currently underway in thousands of communities big and small around the world, driven by people who are concerned about the challenges of climate change, resource depletion (particularly fossil fuels), and the global economic instability that arises from those conditions. One of the beliefs that undergirds our activities says: if we wait for our governments, it will be too little, too late; if we act as individuals, it will be too little; but if we act as communities, it might just be enough, just in time.

The goal of Transition Asheville is to serve as a local catalyst: bringing people and organizations together, encouraging the development of an equitable roadmap toward fossil fuel independence, sharing practical skills and creative solutions, and strengthening local resilience. We believe such efforts can be fun and will enable us not just to survive, but to thrive in the years to come.
