Building a Wood - Fired Earthen Oven at Evergreen Charter School
Meka Bunch, of O.P.E.N. Asheville (Outreach Projects Engaging Neighborhoods) will be leading the construction process for students at Evergrren charter School, along with apprentices from Asheville Green Opportunities (GO!), parents/teachers, and a host of other great volunteers.
"Volunteers from the community may join us for as little or as much as you like, learning the in's and out's of these great, functional art pieces."

The garden space is behind the big, plain, boxy looking building alongside the parking lot. There is an open field behind the building and you'll see us on the far left end, nestled up alongside the forest edge. |
Here's the General Schedule:
Tues. June 5-Thurs. June 7
9:30am-4:30pm
9:30am Arrival, set up, and check in.
10am-1pm Work Session
1pm-1:45pm Lunch (Bring your own and/or bring something to share)
1:45pm-4pm Work Session
4:00pm-4:30pm Site clean up and organization
Here's the Daily Goals Schedule:
Tues.- Build the foundation, cob foundation cap.
Wed.- Cob, insulation under oven floor, install sand bed and fire brick oven floor, pack sand dome (form for interior of the oven), Thermal Mass layer.
Thurs.- Construct cob entrance tunnel and insulation cavity, install insulation layer, cob exterior shell, cob sculptural details.
We may or may not need to work on Friday...It depends on how far we get each day.
Fri.-Cob sculptural elements and finishing
After the oven is built, we will go back
1 or 2 days
the following week, to do an earthen finish plaster and aliz (earthen paint) on the exterior of the oven.
